Writeup: Vivian Vance is best known as Ethel Mertz
on I Love Lucy, but she led a long and distinguished stage
career beforehand, appearing on stage in Albuquerque, NM,
New York City, Los Angeles and in touring companies. It was
while she was with a touring company doing Voice Of The Turtle
that she experienced a nervous breakdown, obviously overwhelmed.
She underwent extensive therapy and fixed her problem, and
eventually returned to Voice Of The Turtle at the La Jolla
Playhouse, where Desi Arnaz spotted her and though she would
be perfect for the role of Etherl Mertz on I Love Lucy. At
first she balked at the role, thinking it was too frumpy,
and she very much disliked being cast as the wife of William
Frawley, who was almost thirty years her senior. However,
she took the role and the rest is history. Vivian's professional
career is almost all Lucy related, including the historic
show which ran from 1951-57, plus the Luci-Desi Comedy Hour
(1957-1960), The Lucille Ball Show (1962-65), and Here's Lucy
(1968). She also appeared in a few TV movies, notably Getting
Away from It All (1972) and Getting Away from It All (1972).
Vivian was the first woman to win a Best Supporting Actress
award, taking it home in 1954. |
