| The
Writeup: Veronica Lake, the world's most famous purveyor
of the peek-a-boo hairstyle, had a terrific decade of filmmaking,
the 40s, and then virtually disappeared from sight. She debuted
in films in 1939 under the name Constance Keane, appearing
in Dancing Co-Ed (1939), Young as You Feel (1940), and Forty
Little Mothers (1940) among others before being signed by
Paramount and rechirstened Veronica Lake. 1941 marked her
first big film, playing the second female lead in I Wanted
Wings and blowing away audiences. Her breakthrough into stardom
came after she appeared in Sullivan's Travels for directory
Preston Sturges, a real power player at Paramount at the time.
Other films in the 40s included This Gun for Hire (1942),
I Married a Witch (1942), So Proudly We Hail! (1943), Bring
on the Girls (1945), Out of This World (1945), Hold That Blonde
(1945), The Blue Dahlia (1946), Ramrod (1947), The Sainted
Sisters (1948), Slattery's Hurricane (1949) and Stronghold
(1951), her last film before disappearing for a number of
years. During her heyday she was one of the favorite pinup
girls of the GIs, cementing her legacy forever even though
her acting career didn't last. After her career and marriage
to Andre De Toth dissolved she made news occasionally for
negative things, such as being arrested for drunkenness and
disorderly conduct. In the late 60s she returned to film with
roles in Footsteps in the Snow (1966) and Flesh Feast (1970),
a low rent horror flick. She also worked in theater at this
time. |
