| The
Writeup: Born in Oklahoma, Vera Miles was schooled
in Kansas and was a regular on the beauty pageant circuit.
In 1948 she was crowned Miss Kansas and moved to Hollywood
soon after with dreams of stardom. Vera earned her first big
screen role Two Tickets to Broadway (1951), and struggled
for five years before landing her big break in John Ford's
1956 western The Searchers (starring John Wayne). The film
gave her career the boost it needed and she became a much
higher caliber actress, nabbing leading roles. In 1957 she
impressed in Hitchcock's The Wrong Man (1957) and was tabbed
for the leading role in Vertigo but was forced to decline
due to a pregnancy. In 1960 she played Janet Leigh's sister
in Psycho, and had the pivotal role of discovering the truth
about Norman's mother. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962),
another John Ford picture, represtented another high point
for her. In 1964 she made her first Disney film, A Tiger Walks,
which would mark the beginning of a long collaboration with
the studio, including Those Calloways (1965), One Little Indian
(1973), The Castaway Cowboy (1974), Run for the Roses (1975)
and Twilight's Last Gleaming (1977). After the 70s she had
little film work (although she did star in Psycho II), and
found her best work guest starring on television. |
