| The
Writeup: Shirley Knight, born in Kansas in 1936, trained
at the Pasadena Playhouse in California before making her
feature film debut in 1959's Five Gates to Hell. The 60s were
a successful decade on film for her, and she delivered a number
of memorable performances, including The Dark at the Top of
the Stairs (1960, earning her a Best Supporting Actress Oscar
nom), Sweet Bird of Youth (1962, another Best Supporting Actress
nom, starring opposite Paul Newman in this film), House of
Women (1962), Flight from Ashiya (1964), Dutchman (1966),
and The Rain People (1969). In the mid to late 60s Shirley
basically quit the Hollywood scene and turned to Broadway,
choosing instead to focus her talents on theater. She also
spent time in London, performing on the stage there. She would
return to Hollywood eventually, but her time as a feature
film star was up, and you would see her starring mostly in
TV movies until the mid 90s, when she reached an age where
she would be considered for mother type roles. Since 1994,
when her feature film career really kicked up again, she has
appeared in a number of notable movies, including Color of
Night (1994), Stuart Saves His Family (1995, a dreadful bomb
starring Al Franken), As Good As It Gets (1997, as Helen Hunt's
mother), Angel Eyes (2001), The Salton Sea (2002), Divine
Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood (2002) and A House on a Hill
(2003). Before she ran off the Broadway in the mid 60s, Shirley
was captured on film quite a bit, and let me tell you, she
was stunningly beautiful, with long sleek blonde hair and
a near impeccable face. |
