Writeup: Shirley Jones is remembered by most people
strictly for her work on television, most notably The Patridge
Family, but that's a shame, since she had a wonderful feature
film career before she moved in to television. Blessed with
attractive girl next door type looks and a heavenly voice,
Shirley's career began with starring roles in two classic
musicals: Oklahoma! (1955) and Carousel (1956) where she proved
she could sing with the best of them. She hit a career high
point playing prostitute Lulu Bains in Elmer Gantry (1960),
a tour de force performance that earned her a Best Actress
Oscar. The Music Man (1962) was another strong performance,
showcasing her unique musical talents. She subsequently starred
in a number of films, including Bedtime Story (1964), Fluffy
(1965), The Secret of My Success (1965), The Happy Ending
(1969), El Golfo (1969), The Cheyenne Social Club (1970),
Beyond the Poseidon Adventure (1979), and Tank (1984), but
none were as impressive as her early efforts. In 1970 Shirley
was cast as Shirley Patridge and endeared herself to an entire
generation while securing a lasting legacy and never ending
fame. She has since appeared in a number of TV movies and
the TV shows Shirley (1979-80) and Melrose Place (1998). |
