Writeup: In 1970 Robert Altman discovered Shelley
Duvall in Houston (she was selling cosmetics, he was filming
Brewster McCloud). He gave her a small part in the film, and
it would be a pairing that would repeat itself many times
in the future. In actuality, she only worked for two directors
in the 70s, Robert Altman and Woody Allen (and she only did
one film with Allen, 1977's Annie Hall, a bit part as one
of his dates). Her films with Altman in the decade include
Thieves Like Us, Nashville, McCabe & Mrs. Miller and 3
Women. In 1980 she played her two most popular roles, Wendy
Torrance, the terrified wife from The Shining, and Olive Oyl
from the Robin Williams film Popeye. After Popeye, she seemed
to just drop off the movie map, appearing mostly in made for
TV movies and on TV shows. It may be that her looks were just
too off beat for Hollywood, or that she was never destined
for stardom, who knows. She now makes a living in character
parts for various levels of film. |
