Writeup: Sally Struthers began her career as a TV
actress and she has never really stayed away. Her first role
was in The Tim Conway Comedy Hour (1970), followed by The
Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour (1970) that same year. It was
in 1971 that she landed her most well known acting role as
Gloria Bunker on All in the Family (1971), one of the most
popular shows of the 70s. In 1982 she received her own spinoff
show entitled Gloria, but it was a flop in the ratings. Nine
to Five (1986) followed, and it lasted until 1988. Interestingly
enough, this was the second TV show version of the popular
Dolly Parton film. Sally did virtually no work in the 1990s
and became known not for her acting but for her commercials
asking people to contribute money to help save the starving
children of Africa. I'm fairly certain almost everyone in
this country has seen one of those commercials at some point
in their life. They were so ubiquitous at one point as to
become the subject of late night jokes and parodies on SNL.
In the new millenium Sally has worked more, appearing on the
TV shows Gilmore Girls (2000) and General Hospital (2002),
plus the feature films Out of the Black (2001), A Month of
Sundays (2001) and Reeseville (2003) . |
