The
Writeup: A multi talented woman with many different
segments of her more than 70 year career in showbiz, Ruth
got started in 1915 in a stage production of Peter Pan.
She acted on stage, and even in a few silent films in the
early part of the century, but her acting career didn't
truly begin until 1940's Abe Lincoln in Illinois (1940),
playing Mary Todd Lincoln, and Dr. Ehrlich's Magic Bullet
(1940). She also starred in Two-Faced Woman (1941), Edge
of Darkness (1943) and Action in the North Atlantic (1943)
in the early 40s. In 1942 she married Garson Kanin and the
two began writing screenplays together, three of which were
Oscar nominated. Together they wrote A Double Life (1947
- Oscar nominated), Adam's Rib (1949 - Oscar nominated),
The Marrying Kind (1952), Pat and Mike (1952 - Oscar nominated),
and The Actress (1953). In 1966 she returned to acting with
a vengeance, giving an Oscar nominated turn in Inside Daisy
Clover (1966). She also appeared in Lord Love a Duck (1966)
and gave the performance of her career in Rosemary's Baby
(1968), winning an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Ruth
may best be remembered as Bud Cort's lover in the black
comedy Harold and Maude (1971), a film that has achieved
full blown cult status and remains beloved to this day.
She acted continuously until her death in 1985, appearing
in The Big Bus (1976), Boardwalk (1979), My Bodyguard (1980),
Delta Pi (1985) and The Trouble with Spies (1987) among
others.
