| The
Writeup: Rosalind Russell is one of the most memorable
comediennes of early Hollywood movies, delighting audiences
with her comic skills from the 30s to the 60s. She debuted
in the serious film Evelyn Prentice (1934), and her biggest
roles early in her career would be in the same type of dramatic
movies, not yet letting out her true comic talent. Her first
big comedic role came in Four's a Crowd (1938), and it was
clear to see after that performance she was destined to be
remembered as a funny lady. Other memorable performances in
her career include China Seas (1935), Under Two Flags (1936),
Night Must Fall (1937), The Citadel (1938), Fast and Loose
(1939), No Time for Comedy (1940), This Thing Called Love
(1941), My Sister Eileen (1942, this film earned her a Best
Actress Oscar nom), What a Woman! (1943), Sister Kenny (1946,
another Oscar nom for Best Actress), Mourning Becomes Electra
(1947, yet another Best Actress Oscar nom), A Woman of Distinction
(1950), Picnic (1955), Auntie Mame (1958, Best Actress Oscar
nom), Gypsy (1962, a well received adaptation of the hit Broadway
musical), and Rosie! (1968). In 1972 she received the Jean
Hersholt Humanitarian Award for her extensive contributions
to charity. Her last film was 1971's Mrs. Pollifax -- Spy,
on which she was also a writer. In 1977 she published an autobiography
entitled Life Is A Banquet. |
