Writeup: Pia Zadora has something of an interesting
story, although considering how unsuccessful she was in Hollywood,
it's somewhat amazing that she still remains fairly popular
to this day. She made her feature film debut in the dreadful
Santa Claus Conquers the Martians (1964) when she was only
10. 18 years later she would make her true acting debut in
Butterfly (1982), playing Kady Tyler, and would be awarded
the Golden Globe's Best New Star award, which is not given
out anymore. The interesting part is that at the time there
were numerous rumors that Pia's husband, Meshulam Riklis,
an Israeli millionaire, had bought her way into Hollywood
and basically bought her Golden Globe (the same year she won
Best New Star she won Worst Actress and Worst New Star from
the Razzie Awards, which are the anti Oscars). Pia basically
killed any chance of a career she had after she appeared in
The Lonely Lady (1983), playing the lead female. It's all
about a screenwriter who will seemingly go to any length to
get her script purchased and produced. She starts out happy,
getting married to another screenwriter, but everything falls
apart when she rewrites one of his scripts and makes it better.
He feels emasculated and leaves her. She subsequently has
all sorts of sex with many different men in an effort to get
her script made. Truthfully, it's one of the worst movies
ever made, and was the Showgirls of it's day. Pia subsequently
made news for her odd antics, including putting her phone
number in the paper so people could call with reports about
her missing dog (you can guess how that turned out). She also
had small roles in Hairspray (1988) and Voyage of the Rock
Aliens (1988), but there was really no other acting after
Lonely Lady. She divorced her wealthy husband in 1993 and
was remarried in 1995 to Jonathan Kaufer, with whom she has
also filed for divorce. |
