| The
Writeup: Penny Marshall is what you would call a renaissance
woman. She's all over the spectrum in Hollywood, ranging from
acting, to directing, to producing. It's an impressive feat
to be able to balance everything, and do it all well, but
it has happened a few times (I'm thinking Ron Howard and Rob
Reiner). Penny began her career in feature films, appearing
in The Savage Seven (1968), How Sweet It Is! (1968) and The
Grasshopper (1970) before landing a part on the TV show The
Odd Couple. She was with the show until 1975 and the very
next year bounced to her own show, Laverne & Shirley,
on which she starred as Laverne. The show was an unquestioned
monster hit, running for seven years and making genuine stars
out of it's two female leads. After Laverne & Shirley
went off the air in '83 Penny appeared in a few telepics and
feature films before trying her hand at directing with 1986's
Jumping Jack Flash. It wasn't a huge hit, but it was as if
Penny had discovered a second calling. In 1988 she directed
Big, starring Tom Hanks, and it turned out to be a monster
hit, nabbing two Oscar nominations and $115 million at the
box office. Since then Penny has directed, produced, and given
the occasional cameo appearance. |
