Writeup: Married to Edgar James at the age of 16,
Paulette Goddard was oft married in her life, and it was her
second marriage that actually brought her quite a bit of fame.
She divoriced James in 1931 and migrated to Hollywood with
her sights set on becoming a star. She appeared in bit parts
a number of films in the early 30s, including The Kid from
Spain (1932), Pack Up Your Troubles (1932), The Mouthpiece
(1932) and Roman Scandals (1933) before her big break in the
1936 Charlie Chaplin film Modern Times. Chaplin had fallen
in love with her and couldn't help casting her in the film.
In fact, the two were married in June of 1936, although they
divorced in 1942. Her most notable acting role may be her
Oscar nominated turn in 1942's So Proudly We Hail!, playing
a nurse. She has many other notable roles though, including
The Young in Heart (1938), The Cat and the Canary (1939),
The Great Dictator (1940), Second Chorus (1940), The Golden
Door (1941), The Lady Has Plans (1942), The Crystal Ball (1943),
Standing Room Only (1944), The Diary of a Chambermaid (1946),
An Ideal Husband (1947), Anna Lucasta (1949) and Vice Squad
(1953). She was married twice more in her lifetime and ended
her life a very wealthy woman. |
