| The
Writeup: Olivia came to Hollywood as a teenager and
landed her first big time role in 1935's production of A Midsummer
Night's Dream (she played the role of Hermia). She was immediately
signed to a contract at Warner Bros. In 1935 she appeared
opposite the charming Errol Flynn in Captain Blood and seemed
to set a course for herself. She would in fact appear opposite
Flynn ten times, all memorable appearances on her part (including
The Charge Of The Light Brigade, Anthony Adverse, The Adventures
Of Robin Hood, and more). In wasn't until 1939, when she was
cast as Melanie in Gone With The Wind (Warner Bros. had loaned
her to David O. Selznick) that we got to see what a talent
Olivia was (Warner Bros. kept her in mostly decorative roles,
she would eventually get fed up with this and sue Warner Bros.
for release from her contract). She earned a Best Supporting
Actress nomination for the film. Her first Best Actress nom
came in the 1941 film Hold Back The Dawn (she was on loan
to Paramount for this film). In the late 40s Olivia had won
her freedom from Warner Bros. and began searching for meatier
dramatic roles, which she found. She won two Academy Awards
in this time, for To Each His Own (1946) and The Heiress (1949).
After The Heiress her career slowed down considerably, she
appeared only in the occasional feature film. |
