Writeup: So how do you judge Norma's career? An obvious
beauty, she won a pageant at age 14, some say that her career
was only spectacular because she married the head of MGM Studios,
Irving Thalberg (the career achievement award at the Oscars
is named after him). While it's certainly true that being
married to the head of a studio will help your career, it
wouldn't have been possible for Thalberg to have maintained
her star status if she didn't have the goods, which she certainly
did. She was first a star of silent films, appearing in He
Who Gets Slapped (1924), Tower of Lies (1925), Upstage (1926),
and The Latest From Paris (1928) among others. In 1927 she
married Thalberg and logically received preferential treatment
from the studio, getting her pick of projects developed by
MGM. Her talkie debut was in The Last of Mrs. Cheyney (1929),
and later that year she appeared in Their Own Desire, which
nabbed her an Oscar nomination. She won an Oscar for Best
Actress for The Divorcee (1930) and would be nominated four
more times in her career, for A Free Soul (1931), The Barretts
of Wimpole Street (1934), Romeo and Juliet (1936), Marie Antoinette
(1938) which was the last great performance of her career.
Marie Antoinette was also the last project Thalberg developed
for her, and it was produced after his untimely death in 1936.
After his death Norma's career hit the skids and she appeared
in only a few more films before retiring and remarrying, this
time to Martin Arouge, to whom she was married until her death
in 1983. |
