| The
Writeup: Nichelle Nichols has been something of a
ground breaking actress in the sense that, as a black female,
she was the first to do many things. Nichelle's career as
an entertainer began in her early years when she was discovered
by Duke Ellington as a teenager and ended up touring with
Duke and Lionel Hampton as a singer and dancer. However, her
first big role in Hollywood was as Lt. Uhura on Star Trek
from 1966-69. Her role was the first in which a black female
was cast as an equal, and not playing something like a maid
or servant. In addition, she was one half of the reported
first interracial screen kiss ever aired (William Shatner
planted one on her). In addition, she became the first African
American to place her hands in the concrete in front of Mann's
Chinese Theater (along with the rest of the cast of Star Trek).
Most of her career has been Star Trek based, but she has also
done a few other feature films including Mister Buddwing (1966),
Doctor, You've Got to Be Kidding (1967), Tarzan's Deadly Silence
(1970), Truck Turner (1974), The Supernaturals (1986), Snow
Dogs (2002), and O2 (2004). She also did all the original
Star Trek movies. |
