Writeup: Mercedes Ruehl is an accomplished, skillful
actress with a long and fruitful career. She made her American
feature film debut in 1979's The Warriors and followed it
up with a string of feature films, including Four Friends
(1981), Heartburn (1986), Twisted (1986), Radio Days (1987),
84 Charing Cross Road (1987), The Secret Of My Success (1987)
and Big (1988). It wasn't until the success of 1988's Married
To The Mob that the American viewing public discovered Mercedes,
and it was after that film that Mercedes began to receive
meatier roles allowing her to stretch more. The films that
followed generally allowed for more actual acting on her part,
and the best include Slaves Of New York (1989), Crazy People
(1990), Another You (1990), and The Fisher King (1991). She
was awarded an Oscar for her role in The Fisher King, the
only nomination she has received in her career. She was excellent
in 1993's Lost In Yonkers, playing the same role she won a
Tony for on Broadway, and then in the summer of 1993 she appeared
in the Schwarzenegger bomb Last Action Hero. It could be argued
that this movie killed her career, she didn't appear in a
feature film again until 1997, but who really knows. Since
that fateful film in 1993, she has appeared mostly in made
for TV movies and low budget features. |
