| The
Writeup: Trained at New York's Neighborhood Playhouse,
Meg Foster managed to survive the entire program, something
few actors can manage (their cutting process is brutal, few
make it to the second year). However, most of her feature
films have been low rent exploitation films that rarely make
use of her talents. Notable feature films include Carny (1980),
which also starred Jodie Foster, The Osterman Weekend (1983),
Riding Fast (1986), Masters of the Universe (1987), and a
number of silly films with titles like Back Stab (1990), Shadowchaser
(1992), Shrunken Heads (1994), Immortal Combat (1994) and
The Killers Within (1995). TV has brought her excellent opportunities
to show off her acting chops, especially early on in her career.
Notable performances are Hestery Prynne in the PBS mini series
The Scarlet Letter (1979) and Jennie Jamison in the mini series
Washington: Behind Closed Doors (1977). The TV movies James
Dean (1976), Sunshine Christmas (1977) and Guyana Tragedy:
The Story of Jim Jones (1980) were also well received. In
1982 she was cast as the original Christine Cagney in the
popular series Cagney & Lacey, opposite Tyne Daly. However,
she was quickly removed and replaced by Sharon Gless. The
official reason was that she played the character too tough,
but many believe it is because audiences found her too butch.
It's unfortunate, because it could have been a career changing
role. Meg still works in films today though, so she's doing
well. |
