| The
Writeup: Mary Pickford was one of the greatest stars
of the silent film era, becoming known as America's Sweetheart
(even though she was born in Canada) in short time due to
her appealing good looks and wonderful films. Mary was also
quite a brilliant businesswoman as well, negotiating some
of the most lucrative contracts in film history, producing
a number of her own films, cofounding United Artists, which
still distributes movies today, and helping to establish the
Motion Picture Relief Fund. Also, her and husband Douglas
Fairbanks established the Pickfair estate, a legendary Hollywood
home that played host to some of the world's most famous celebs
during Mary's heyday. In 1919 Mary was paid $350,000 to appear
in the silent film The Hoodlum, an ungodly amount of money
in those days. This became her standard salary, until she
formed her own studio and began producing her own films and
reaping all the profits for herself and the studio. She appeared
in far too many films to bother listing any, but rest assured
she remains perhaps the most brilliant female star of the
silent film era. |
