Writeup: Raised in Michigan, Martha Smith enrolled
at Michigan State ate age 17 to study psychology, but it wasn't
long before she gave up her academic career to pursue modeling,
something she had come into while at the university. Her biggest
modeling gig came when she was named the Play.boy Play.mate
of the month in July 1973, kicking off a career in modeling
and show business. Her first brush with showbusiness came
in a guest starring gig on The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour
where she played herself. She subsequently appeared on episodes
of Quincy and Charlie's Angels before landing the role of
Babs Jansen in the comedy classic Animal House. That same
year she had a nice role in the mini series How the West Was
Won (1978), about families going out west. Her greatest exposure
has come in series television however, most notably on the
shows Days of Our Lives (1982), Scarecrow and Mrs. King (1983-87)
and Divorce Court (1986), which she hosted for 110 episodes.
Other feature films on her resume include Blood Link (1982),
and Broadcast News (1987). In 2003 she made something of a
return to acting, with a role in the TV mini series Kingpin,
playing a socialite, a part in the telepic Hotel, and a guest
starring spot on Oliver Beene. Perhaps a long term return
to acting is in the cards. |
