Writeup: Mariah is one of the top selling female musicians
of all time, and, to her at least, it seemed natural that
she would transition to an acting career in an effort to prolong
her fame and get a little cross platform advertising going
on. So the disaster that became was Glitter went into planning.
It would be based loosely upon Mariah's life as a struggling
musician, and Mariah would star and record the soundtrack.
In theory, Mariah would have a number one album and number
one movie in the same week, solidfying her status as a top
female entertainer. However, none of this came to fruition.
In fact, Glitter was one of the biggest bombs of the year,
the album didn't sell at all, and Mariah had a nervous breakdown
and had to check herself into the hospital. As a result of
the fallout from this failed project, Virgin (her record company)
essentially fired Mariah (she did get a $20 million severance
package though) and she lost much of her draw as a performer.
She has since released a moderately successful album and starred
in two independent films with a third on the way, although
it'll be a long time before she's taken seriously as an actress
again. |
