Writeup: Margaux Hemingway, daughter of famed writer
Ernest Hemingway, was an amazingly popular model in her late
teens and early 20s. She had a rich promotional contract with
Faberge perfume and saw her face gracing covers of magazines
all over the world. It seemed logical to attempt and acting
career, something that would no doubt extend her career and
garner even more fame. So at age 21 she snagged the lead in
the film Lipstick (1976), and even did her sister Mariel a
favor by suggesting the producers cast her in a role in the
film as well. As it turned out, the film tanked and the only
person who survived the backlash was Mariel. Mariel's acting
career took off and Margaux's was left sputtering. She appeared
in four films in the next ten years, Killer Fish (1979), They
Call Me Bruce? (1982), Over the Brooklyn Bridge (1984), La
Máquina de matar (1984), the last a fairly standard piece
of garbage released on Sybil Danning's Adventure Video label.
Margaux's acting career never really recovered from her opening
failure and she took developed a heavy drinking problem, destroying
two marriages. It got so bad she was forced to check herself
into the Betty Ford Clinic, something she did in 1988. After
her recovery she attempted to bounce back into a successful
acting career, but it never panned out and she only appeared
in more lowly junk like Inner Sanctum (1991), Deadly Rivals
(1993), Double Obsession (1994), Frame-Up II: The Cover-Up
(1996) and Dangerous Cargo (1996). On July 2, 1996 she was
found dead in her apartment. It was declared a suicide by
the coroner, or so it was reported, but her sister later proclaimed
that this was a falsehood and her sister could not possibly
have killed herself, pointing out that she left no note and
was found propped up on a pillow with a book on her lap. She
also reported that the original coroner had said that Margaux
most likely died of an epileptic seizure and that the papers
said it was a suicide because it was juicier news coverage. |
