| The
Writeup: An eccentric British actress trained at The
Old Vic, Margaret Rutherford debuted on stage in 1925 and
was 11 years later when she made her feature film debut in
Hideout in the Alps (1936). At the time she was in her mid
40s, making her success something of an anomaly. Margaret
could always be counted on for a brilliant comedic performance
and this gift gave her a long and fruitful career, spanning
three decades and more than 40 feature films. Her most notable
work includes Beauty and the Barge (1937), Quiet Wedding (1941),
Yellow Canary (1943), Blithe Spirit (1945), Meet Me at Dawn
(1947), Passport to Pimlico (1949), The Magic Box (1951),
Miss Robin Hood (1952), The Runaway Bus (1954), Big Time Operators
(1957), On the Double (1961), and The V.I.P.s (1963). The
V.I.P.s won her the greatest acclaim of her career, including
a Golden Globe, Oscar, and a Laurel Award. Not bad. Margaret
passed away in 1972 due to complications from pneumonia. She
was 80. |
