Writeup: A talented actress with a distinctive nose,
Margaret Hamilton will always be best known as the Wicked
Witch Of The West in the classic film The Wizard Of Oz (1939).
However, she had a long career outside of Oz, including 70
feature films, five TV shows, and a few TV movies. She made
her feature film debut in Another Language (1933) and spent
her career delivering strong supporting roles (she was never
going to make it as a leading lady with her looks), never
giving a bad performance. Notable films include Broadway Bill
(1934), Way Down East (1935), The Witness Chair (1936), You
Only Live Once (1937), I'll Take Romance (1937), Breaking
the Ice (1938), Main Street Lawyer (1939), My Little Chickadee
(1940) , Meet the Stewarts (1942), Johnny Come Lately (1943),
Janie Gets Married (1946), Driftwood (1947), Texas, Brooklyn
and Heaven (1948), The Sun Comes Up (1949), and 13 Ghosts
(1960). Her last film appearance was in The Anderson Tapes
(1971), but she worked sparingly during the 50s and 60s, experiencing
her heyday in the 30s and 40s. The 60s found her on television,
starring in That Was the Week That Was (1964), The Secret
Storm (1964-67), As the World Turns (1970), and Sigmund and
the Sea Monsters (1973-74). |
