| The
Writeup: Mackenzie Phillips has led a tumultous, and
successful, career. She first experienced stardom as a cast
member of the hugely popular George Lucas movie American Graffiti
(1973), her feature film debut. Two years later she was cast
on One Day At A Time, a show that would go on to become a
huge ratings winner. After five years on the show she was
having some troubles coping with stardom and essentially growing
up in front of the cameras. She developed a cocaine habit
and was arrested for cocaine possession during the third season.
By 1980 she had succumbed fully to the addiction and was mostly
unable to function, showing up late for rehearsals, feeling
fatigued, and even acting incoherent at times. She was given
a six week leave of absence but was no better when she returned
so she was fired from the show. She returned in 1981 but was
once again fired in 1983, for more drug related problems.
I guess it took some time, but she is fully cleaned up now
and seems to have revitalized her career. She appeared on
The Guiding Light in 1996 and played Molly Phillips on So
Weird for three seasons (1999-2002). She also appeared in
the feature film When (1999) and the TV movie Double Teamed
(2002), so it seems she has things in order once again. |
