Writeup: Although she's only been known in recent
years for the sideshow her life has become (drug abuse problems
and the uber bizarre marriage to seeming lunatic David Gest),
Liza Minnelli was once a fabulously talented singer and actress.
In 1972 she won an Oscar for her portrayal of Sally Bowles
in Cabaret, and she was also nominated for an Oscar in the
1969 film The Sterile Cuckoo. She never achieved the status
of movie star, probably due to a poor selection of material,
but she remains an enormous figure in Hollywood and the music
industry. She is also a powerful stage performer, winning
three Tony awards (one for Flora, the Red Menace, one for
The Act, and a special lifetime achievement award). |
