on film in 1912. She was one of the most popular stars of
the silent film era, appearing in many of the best films to
come out of that time. She was Oscar nominated for her supporting
turn in Duel in the Sun (1946) and was nominated for a Golden
Globe for her supporting turn The Comedians (1967). Almost
exclusively a silent film actress, her notable films from
the era include Her Condoned Sin (1914), Home, Sweet Home
(1914), The Birth of a Nation (1915), Daphne and the Pirate
(1916), The House Built Upon Sand (1916), A Romance of Happy
Valley (1919), Way Down East (1920), Romola (1924), The Scarlet
