Writeup: Leslie Caron was dancing in the Ballets des
Champs-Elysées when she was discovered by Gene Kelly, who
was scouting Paris for a leading lady to appear in his film
An American In Paris. He was impressed, and Leslie got the
job, and won herself the adoration of the American public
and a contract with MGM at the same time. Her heyday was in
the 50s and early 60s, where she earned two Oscar nominations,
for Lili (1953) and The L-Shaped Room (1963). It was the era
of musicals, and Leslie was a dancer, so she flourished in
many musicals of the time, although her second Oscar nom was
for a dramatic performance in a serious film, proving she
had far reaching talent. She never really reached the highs
of her early career after The L-Shaped Room. She has been
alternating between French productions and Hollywood films
since, and nothing has hit home like her early work. |
