| The
Writeup: The Juilliard trained Lee Grant came out
of the box with a bang, nabbing an Oscar nomination for her
first film, playing a young shoplifter in Detective Story
(1951). Unfortunately, her young career was derailed by her
blacklisting during the disgusting time in this country known
as the McCarthy era. Her husband, playwright Arnold Manoff
was also blacklisted. She only appeared in two movies in the
next ten years, Storm Fear (1955) and Middle of the Night
(1959), returning from the blacklist in 1963 with The Balcony
(1963), after which things picked up for her. She was subsequently
Oscar nominated three times for The Landlord (1970), Shampoo
(1975 - for which she won Best Supporting Actress), and Voyage
of the Damned (1976). Other notable films include In the Heat
of the Night (1967), Valley of the Dolls (1967), The Big Bounce
(1969), The Last Generation (1971), Airport '77 (1977), When
You Comin' Back, Red Ryder? (1979) and Constance (1984). In
1980 she turned to directing, making her debut with Tell Me
a Riddle (1980). She has since directed What Sex Am I? (1985),
Down and Out in America (1986 documentary - won an Academy
Award for best Docu), Staying Together (1989) and a great
deal of the Intimate Portrait programs for Lifetime. |
