| The
Writeup: Kim Hunter is remembered today as the famous
Stella that Marlon Brando is calling out for in the film version
of A Streetcar Named Desire (1951). She had previously appeared
on film in The Seventh Victim (1943), Tender Comrade (1943),
When Strangers Marry (1944), You Came Along (1945) and Stairway
to Heaven (1946) before returning to Broadway and creating
the role of Stella Kowalski in the original stage production
of Streetcar. She wouldn't make another movie until the film
adaptation of the play, but it was quite a return, nabbing
her a Best Supporting Actress Oscar among other accolades.
She subsequently starred in Deadline - U.S.A. (1952), Anything
Can Happen (1952), Storm Center (1956), The Young Stranger
(1957) and Money, Women and Guns (1959) before her career
was derailed as a result of being blacklisted during the McCarthy
era, a shameful time in this country's history. She made a
triumphant return in 1968, starring in Planet of the Apes
(1968) as Zira. She reprised the role in two sequels before
mostly disappearing from the big screen for 25 years. During
her time away from the big screen she starred in TV movies
and even had a role on the soap The Edge Of The Night during
the 1979-1980 season. 1997 saw her back in major motion pictures,
playing Betty Harty in Midnight in the Garden of Good and
Evil (1997). She has since appeared in A Price Above Rubies
(1998), Out of the Cold (1999) and Here's to Life! (2000).
In 2000, her husband of nearly 50 years, Robert Emmett, passed
away. |
