Writeup: Kathy Kinney is what you would call a big
woman, and yet she has managed big success in Hollywood, becoming
one of the few large women to be able to do that well (Camryn
Manheim and Rosie O'Donnell also come to mind). In the early
80s she was a secretary at WCBS-TV in New York while pursuing
her acting career, which eventually found it's footing when
she landed a role in the feature film Parting Glances (1986).
In the next four years she would rack up considerable credits,
including the feature films Scrooged (1988), Three Fugitives
(1989), Stanley & Iris (1990), Arachnophobia (1990) and The
Linguini Incident (1991), as well as the TV movies Inherit
the Wind (1988), Promised a Miracle (1988) and Tag Team (1991).
She played mostly small supporting parts in these films, but
she was working her way up. It's probably fair to say that
her most notable role during this time was as Prudence Goddard
for one season on the popular sitcom Newhart (1989-1990).
Her biggest role to date has come on The Drew Carey Show,
which began in 1995. She plays what could be considered the
lead female on the show, trading barbs with Drew. The comedic
combination worked wonders in the show's opening years, drawing
critical praise and high ratings. In the last couple of years
the show has seen a large decline in numbers and has faced
cancellation, although I'm not sure if the show is still in
production or not. |
