Writeup: A beautiful and multi talented actress, Joan
Chen began her career as an in China, and was awarded China's
Best Actress award for her performance in 1980's The Little
Flower. This performance led the Chinese press to dub her
The Elizabeth Taylor Of China, all while still a teenager.
While it seemed she had a future in China, Joan chose to migrate
to the United States, where she attended college and began
developing an acting career. Her first big role in the US
came in the 1987 film The Last Emperor, and would be a foreshadowing
of the kind of parts she would be stuck in in the US. Her
other well known US role was as Josie Packard on the short
lived but wildly popular Twin Peaks in the early 90s. Other
feature films include Salute to the Jugger (1990), Heaven
& Earth (1993), Golden Gate (1994), On Deadly Ground (1994),
Judge Dredd (1995), Precious Find (1996), What's Cooking?
(2000), and Avatar (2002). Because of her Asian descent Joan
has been limited in her choice of roles, one of the many problems
in Hollywood. She directed the 2002 Richard Gere/Winona Ryder
film Autumn In New York. |
