| The
Writeup: Joan Blondell spent her teenage years in
Dallas, Texas where she was on the beauty pageant circuit,
eventually making her way to Broadway on the clout of her
pageant wins. She appeared opposite James Cagney in Penny
Arcade on Broadway and was signed by Warner Bros. to star
in the feature film adaptation of the play, Sinner's Holiday
(1930). She would then go on to star in more Warner Bros.
films in the 30s than any other actress, including My Past
(1931), The Reckless Hour (1931), Union Depot (1932), Central
Park (1932), Goodbye Again (1933), Dames (1934), Broadway
Gondolier (1935), Stage Struck (1936), Back in Circulation
(1937), and Off the Record (1939). Her contract with Warners
ran out in the 40s and she starred in fewer and fewer films
over the next few decades, never equaling the output of the
30s, but then again, who in their right mind could do so (she
appeared in more than 50 films in the 30s). She would earn
a few accolades for her later work, including an Oscar nom
for Best Supporting Actress in The Blue Veil (1951), and Golden
Globe noms for The Cincinnati Kid (1965, Supporting) and Opening
Night (1977, Supporting). |
