| The
Writeup: The daughter of actor Richard Bennett, Joan
made her feature film debut in Power (1928), a small film.
The next year she was cast by Samuel Goldwyn in the hugely
successful Bulldog Drummond (1929), a star making role that
brought her into the limelight. A successful thirty year career
followed, featuring contract stints at Warner Bros, Fox, and
Paramount. She appeared in a number of notable films over
the years, including Puttin' on the Ritz (1930), Moby Dick
(1930), Doctors' Wives (1931), The Trial of Vivienne Ware
(1932), Little Women (1933), Private Worlds (1935), Two in
a Crowd (1936), I Met My Love Again (1938), The Man in the
Iron Mask (1939), She Knew All the Answers (1941), The Wife
Takes a Flyer (1942), Scarlet Street (1945), Hollow Triumph
(1948), Father of the Bride (1950, playing Elizabeth Taylor's
mother) and it's sequel Father's Little Dividend (1951), We're
No Angels (1955), and Navy Wife (1956). She made her final
feature film appearance in Suspiria (1977), but was basically
out of films after 1956, only appearing in three movies over
the next 20 years. She official retired in the early 80s and
became involved in the cosmetics business. In an interesting
note, her career took something of a hit in 1952 when her
husband, Walter Wanger, shot her agent in a jealous rage (interestingly,
according to my info they weren't divorced until 1965). |
