| The
Writeup: An impressive actress whose career spanned
some 65 years, Jessica is something of an anomaly in that
she didn't achieve her greatest fame until she was nearly
80 years old, which is quite rare in Hollywood if you hadn't
already guessed. She made her feature film debut in The Indiscretions
of Eve (1932) and starred in a select few films over the next
three decades, such as Murder in the Family (1938), The Valley
of Decision (1945), The Green Years (1946), A Woman's Vengeance
(1948), The Desert Fox: The Story of Rommel (1951), The Light
in the Forest (1958), and The Birds (1963). During this time
she concentrated more on her stage career than Hollywood.
She won a Tony for her legendary performance as Blanche DuBois
in the original Broadway production of Tennessee Williams'
A Streetcar Named Desire and appeared on stage in numerous
other productions. In the beginning of the 1980s Jessica saw
a career resurgence, appearing in popular films The World
According to Garp (1982), Still of the Night (1982), The Bostonians
(1984), and the big hits Cocoon (1985), *batteries not included
(1987), and Cocoon: The Return (1988). It was her role in
Driving Miss Daisy (1989), as the crotchety old southern woman,
that won her her highest career acclaim, made her a star,
and earned her her first Oscar nomination. She would receive
another for her next film, Fried Green Tomatoes (1991). Jessica
passed away in 1994. |
