Writeup: The rise to fame of Jennifer Jones is an
interesting one, so let's get to it. Born Phyllis Isley, she
was determined at a young age that she would be an actress.
She studied at New York's American Academy of Dramatic Arts
as a young woman and shortly thereafter won a six month contract
from Republic Pictures. Turns out her father at the time owned
a theater chain the Republic needed to distribute their pictures
so they willingly gave her a contract. She appeared in a few
films, notably New Frontier (1939) and Dick Tracy's G-Men
(1939) before being dropped from her contract. David O. Selznick,
uber producer, spotted her in Hollywood shortly after her
contract termination and decided that he would make her a
star. Amazingly, he was able to do so, and not in any small
sort. Her started by changing her name to Jennifer Jones,
enrolled her in one acting class after another, and orchestrated
a big publicity build up for her. When she was ready he searched
for the perfect movie for her until he discovered The Song
of Bernadette (1943), his vision an ideal role. Turns out
he was correct, because she took home a Best Actress Oscar
for the role. In an amazing feat, Jennifer was Oscar nomination
for the first four films she did after her rediscovery be
Selznick. These films are Since You Went Away (1944), Love
Letters (1945), and Duel in the Sun (1946). Jennifer married
Selznick in 1949 and he continued to guide her career, helping
her land excellent roles using her prestige and power in Hollywood.
She earned another Oscar nomination for Love Is a Many-Splendored
Thing (1955). When Selznick died in 1965 so did her career
coincidentally. She appeared in very few pics after his passing,
ending a wonderful career. |
