| The
Writeup: Born in Barstow, California and shortly thereafter
moved to Los Angeles, Jeanne Crain was a beautiful young woman
(winner of Miss Long Beach 1941) and a lovely actress, she
debuted in the feature film The Gang's All Here (1943) in
a small role. Often cast in musicals, such as her star turn
in State Fair (1945), she was not a singer and all her songs
were dubbed by Louanne Hogan, who was kept under contract
to dub Jeanne's songs. State Fair made her a star and kept
the hearts of many young men fluttering. Other notable roles
include Centennial Summer (1946), You Were Meant for Me (1948),
Apartment for Peggy (1948), Pinky (1949, directed by Elia
Kazan, she played a light skinned black woman passing for
white and her excellent performance was awarded with an Oscar
Nomination), Take Care of My Little Girl (1951), Belles on
Their Toes (1952), Dangerous Crossing (1953), Duel in the
Jungle (1954), The Second Greatest Sex (1955), Guns of the
Timberland (1959), Madison Avenue (1962), and Invasion 1700
(1962). After 1962 she essentially retired, appearing in only
three more films in her career, the last being Skyjacked (1972).
