| The
Writeup: Jean Stapleton began her long and illustrious
career on the stage, performing at a small playhouse in Maine.
It wasn't long before she was making her stage debut in New
York, appearing in The Corn Is Green in 1948. Shortly thereafter
she appeared on Broadway, in such productions as Damn Yankees
(1955, she was also in the 1958 film version, her feature
film debut), Bells Are Ringing (1956), and after her film
and TV career had started, she appeared in Rhinoceros (1961)
and Funny Girl (1964). Her first TV experience was Woman with
a Past (1954), a quickly canceled show. In the 60s she starred
in a few feature films, Bells Are Ringing (1960), Something
Wild (1961) and Up the Down Staircase (1967), but it wasn't
until 1971 that she would land the role that would define
her career. That year she was cast as Edith Bunker in the
seminal series All In The Family. A button pushing show, it
became one of the most popular shows of the 70s and ran until
1979. She also appeared for one year on the spinoff/sequel
series, Archie Bunker's Place, which ran from 1979-1983. Other
TV work includes Bagdad Cafe (1990), Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle (1994)
and Beakman's World (1995), all fairly short lived. She works
sparingly now, having appeared most notably in the feature
films Michael (1996), You've Got Mail (1998) and Pursuit of
Happiness (2001) in the past decade. |
