| The
Writeup: Jean Simmons had a long, healthy career of
nearly 20 years before she found her star fading. She began
her career in England with a number of quality roles in British
productions like Great Expectations, Black Narcissus, Hamlet
(an Oscar nominated role), and The Blue Lagoon. In 1950 she
married actor Stewart Granger and moved with him to Hollywood,
where she almost instantly jumped into major motion pictures.
She had a tremendous run in the 50s, and the highlights include
Angel Face, Affair With A Stranger, Young Bess, The Egyptian,
Hilda Crane, Until They Sail and This Earth Is Mine. She divorced
her husband in 1960 and quickly got married again, this time
to writer/director Richard Brooks, who cast opposite Burt
Lancaster in Elmer Gantry. That same year she starred in the
now famous Stanley Kubrick film Spartacus opposite Kirk Douglas.
Her late 60s films were not up to par with her best work,
but she was once again nominated for an Oscar, this time for
Best Actress, for The Happy Ending (1969). In the 80s and
90s she has remained visible on television, appearing in made
for TV movies and the occasional TV show. |
