Writeup: A small town girl from Iowa, Jean was a student
at Iowa University when she won the role of St. Joan Of Arc,
over 18,000 other applicants, in the 1957 movie Saint Joan.
It seemed as though a star was born, but the film flopped
and all the publicity in the world can't prevent that. She
subsequently appeared in Bonjour tristesse (1958), The Mouse
That Roared (1959) and Breathless (1960), but the American
moviegoing public didn't bite into these movies either, leaving
Jean with little choice but to remain in Europe if she wanted
to pursue a successful film career. And so she did, appearing
in more than 35 films in her career, most of them European.
Notable titles include Five Day Lover (1961), In the French
Style (1963), Backfire (1964), Moment to Moment (1965), A
Fine Madness (1966), Birds in Peru (1968), Airport (1970),
Dead of Summer (1970), The French Conspiracy (1972), La Corrupción
de Chris Miller (1973), The Big Delirium (1975), The Wild
Duck (1976). In 1979 she was found dead due to an overdose
of barbituates. It would later be speculated that she endured
many of screen problems, often reflected in her characters,
only the public never guessed she had such problems. |
