| The
Writeup: Jayne Mansfield is sometimes considered a
poor man's Marilyn Monroe, and given her looks, figure, and
mannerisms it's not hard to see the comparison. Jayne also
has a dedicated and obsessive fanbase like Ms. Marilyn, although
much smaller. Jayne's first big hit was in the 1956 film The
Girl Can't Help It. She collaborated with director Frank Tashlin
on the film and the two worked together again the following
year in the film Rock Hunter, of which Jayne had starred in
the Broadway version. She was a natural fit for the role,
and it is still considered one of her biggest successes to
this day. Other roles, like Kiss Them For Me (1957), The Wayward
Bus (1957), Too Hot To Handle (1960) The George Raft Story
(1961) and It Happened In Athens (1962) featured Jayne in
mostly decorative roles, and probably shortened her career.
By the mid 60s she was pretty much burnt out as a star and
her films became low budget clunkers, many of them even filmed
outside of Hollywood. She passed away in a horrible car crash
in 1967. Her daughter, Mariska Hargitay now appears on the
hit NBC show Law & Order: SVU. |
