| The
Writeup: The owner of a long and varied career, Jane
Wyman first moved to Hollywood as a child with her actress
mother. When she experienced little success, the two moved
back to Missouri and Jane didn't make it back to Hollywood
until the mid 30s. In the early 30s she became a radio singer,
which eventually led to bit parts in the films My Man Godfrey
and Cain and Mabel (both 1936) before she landed a contract
with Warner Bros. As a contract actress she would work a great
deal over the next 10 years, but she would not achieve great
success until nearly 10 years later in Billy Wilder's drama
The Lost Weekend (1945). The very next year she received an
Oscar nomination for Best Actress for The Yearling (1946).
In 1948 she won a Best Actress statue for her portrayal of
a deaf mute in Johnny Belinda (1948). It is probably the best
work she's ever done in her career, and it gave her the cred
to be choosier with her parts and work with the most talented
people in Hollywood. She worked with Alfred Hitchcock in Stage
Fright (1950), appeared in The Glass Menagerie (1950), which
was a big time role, and appeared in Frank Capra's Here Comes
The Groom (1951). She also picked up a few more Oscar noms,
for The Blue Veil (1951) and Magnificent Obsession (1954).
Like many older actresses, Jane turned to television when
her movie star status began to run out. Here she achieved
amazing success as well, starring in the mega popular nighttime
soap Falcon Crest for it's entire run of nine years. |
