Writeup: A bigger TV star in her later years than
she ever was a movie star in her younger days, Jane was born
into a well to do family in 1911 and studied at the prestigious
Barnard College before going into theater. After a long run
on stage she was signed by Universal and began her feature
film career with One More River (1934). She never really had
many memorable roles on film and never achieved movie stardom,
but her most notable roles include Lost Horizon (1937), The
Girl From God's Country (1940), Army Surgeon (1942), None
But the Lonely Heart (1944), Strange Conquest (1946), Gentleman's
Agreement (1947), Task Force (1949), and Criminal Lawyer (1951).
Despite her movie career, she is best known as a TV actress,
appearing on the popular TV series Father Knows Best in the
late 50s and early 60s, plus starring in all the TV movie
reunions of the show. Other TV series work includes St. Elsewhere
(1983-88) and Confidential For Women (1966 - as the narrator).
