Writeup: A lovely and talented actress from the 30s
and 40s, Irene Dunne was a former opera singer who turned
to musical comedy when she couldn't quite cut it as an opera
diva. She made her Broadway debut in The Clinging Vin (1922)
and subsequently performed well in a continuous string of
impressive musicals. RKO signed her to a contract in 1930
and she made her feature film debut in the musical Leathernecking
(1930). Her next film was the western Cimarron (1931), a Best
Picture winner which also earned Irene a Best Actress nomination.
Other pictures from early in her career include Back Street
(1932), Back Street (1932), The Silver Cord (1933), If I Were
Free (1933), The Age of Innocence (1934), Sweet Adeline (1935),
Roberta (1935) and Show Boat (1936). In Show Boat she played
Magnolia Hawks, a role she had become familiar with on Broadway,
and she was able to shine in the picture. She would go on
to earn four more Oscar nominations in her career (never winning),
for Theodora Goes Wild (1936), The Awful Truth (1937), Love
Affair (1939), and I Remember Mama (1948). All nominations
were for leading actress. Her final on screen appearance came
in It Grows on Trees (1952), after which she retired and turned
to other pursuits, including serving on the board of directors
at Technicolor. She died in 1990 at the age of 91 due to heart
failure. |
