Writeup: Here's a novel story: In 1984 some producer
had a superb idea for a Superman spinoff entitled Supergirl.
They would cast a beautiful actress to play the lead, get
Christopher Reeve to cameo (he later dropped out of the cameo
role) and make a whole bunch of sequels, essentially printing
money for themselves. Everything seemed to be in order, until
of course the movie came out. It was a terrible, stinky bomb
and broke the bank for those producers who thought they were
so smart. About the only person to survive that movie was
Helen Slater, for whom Supergirl remained a big break, her
first feature film, and the movie that established her name.
She followed up with excellent turns in Ruthless People, The
Secret Of My Success, and Sticky Fingers, establishing herself
as an actress and setting up a lengthy future career. She
now seems to split her time between telepics and low budget
feature films. |
