| The
Writeup: Born in Ontario, Canada, Helen Shaver made
her feature film debut in Shoot (1976), a low budget film
starring Ernest Borgnine. She subsequently appeared in The
Supreme Kid (1976), Starship Invasions (1977), Who Has Seen
the Wind (1977) and High-Ballin' (1978) before being cast
as one of the older women in In Praise of Older Women (1978),
even though she was only 25. The role generated some heat
and a great deal of praise from around the country. The next
year she appeared in the hit movie The Amityville Horror (1979),
the only genuine hit of her career. Other notable films include
The Osterman Weekend (1983), Best Defense (1984, a fairly
awful comedy), Desert Hearts (1985), The Color of Money (1986,
a wonderful performance opposite Paul Newman), The Believers
(1987), The Land Before Time (1988, providing the voice of
Littlefoot's mother), Zebrahead (1992), Born to Be Wild (1995),
The Craft (1996), The Wishing Tree (1999), and Bear with Me
(2000). She is also a veteran of series TV, having appeared
on the short lived shows Search and Rescue: The Alpha Team
(1977), United States (1980), Jessica Novak (1981), WIOU (1990),
and The Education of Max Bickford (2001). In later years she
has turned to directing, guiding episodes of Judging Amy,
Soul Food, and The District among others. |
