| The
Writeup: Gloria Stuart is a fascinating story. Way
back in the 1930s, Gloria was signed to a contract by Universal
and began on a career she hoped would lead to stardom. She
never reached the heights she was hoping for, but she did
appear in more than 40 films in the 30s and 40s. Most notable
among them are The Old Dark House (1932), The Invisible Man
(1933), The Kiss Before the Mirror (1933), Roman Scandals
(1933), Here Comes the Navy (1934), The Prisoner of Shark
Island (1936), The Lady Escapes (1937), Life Begins in College
(1937), Change of Heart (1938), Time Out for Murder (1938),
The Three Musketeers (1939), Here Comes Elmer (1943) and The
Whistler (1944). In 1946 she retired from acting, content
to raise a family and pursue other areas of life. Apparently,
it was something of a mystery that Gloria never hit it big
because she was quite beautiful, talented, and charming. In
the early 80s Gloria returned to film with My Favorite Year
(1982) and occasionally appeared in movies over the next fifteen
years before landing the biggest role of her career in a little
movie known as Titanic (1997). The fanfare surrounding her
rise to the big time was deafening. She received an Academy
Award nomination and worldwide acclaim for her performance.
She didn't exactly turn it into a second career, she hasn't
really done much since, but it must have been sweet to finally
taste big time success. |
