Writeup: Gina Torres was born in New York City and,
after struggling to break into the big time for a number of
years in Hollywood, appears to be on the cusp of becoming
a star. She made her debut in the 1995 TV movie M.A.N.T.I.S.,
a mostly forgettable and silly movie. The feature film Bed
Of Roses (1996) followed and it seemed like she was building
a career. However, after the 1997 TV movie Underworld, in
which she had a small part, we didn't see Gina again for three
years. In 2000 she appeared on the short lived syndicated
series Cleopatra 2525 and she hasn't looked back since then.
After Cleopatra went off the air Gina ended up on Firefly,
the Joss Whedon show, which was once again short lived, but
everything seems to have worked out in the end. She was cast
as Cas in the Matrix sequels and being a part of two of the
biggest movies of all time is going to do good things for
her career, I can tell. In addition to the Matrix movies she
appeared in 2003 on the TV show Angel, has a role in the Firefly
big screen adaptation, and will appear in the 2004 Barbershop
spinoff Beauty Shop, which stars Queen Latifah. |
