Writeup: Americans first experienced Gina Lollobrigida
in the late 40s, thanks to the international press, and it
was love at first site. She was an utter bombshell and we
couldn't wait to see her in an American film. This graduate
of the Rome Academy of Fine Arts made her Italian film debut
in Return of the Black Eagle (1946), and it wasn't long before
Gina became one of Italy's top stars, drawing everyone to
the box office to see her films. She was supposed to make
her American film debut in 1949 but lost the chance because
of a contract foul up with Howard Hughes, an unfortunate turn
of events for Gina. By the time she appeared in an American
film, John Huston's Beat The Devil (1954), she was just another
bombshell, and she wasn't nearly as pretty as Sophia Loren,
a younger, more skilled actress. America had lost it's taste
for Gina, it just took to long for her to transplant herself
to American cinema, and she was subsequently given poor film
roles, limiting her star power. She eventually returned to
Europe, where she was more well known, and finished out her
career. She retired in the 70s to pursue other businesses. |
