| The
Writeup: Gilda Radner grew up in Detroit and after
graduating from High School enrolled in the University Of
Michigan. She shortly dropped out to follow a boyfriend to
Canada and made her stage debut in Godspell, which at the
time also starred John Belushi. She also began a stint with
the world famous Second City comedy troupe, the job that led
to her casting as one of the original "not yet ready
for primetime players" on Saturday Night Live. She created
a whole host of eccentric characters and became one of the
most beloved comediennes of her time. She was even awarded
an Emmy in 1979 for her performance on the show. In 1980 she
left the show and began a movie career. Her first big project
was Gilda Live (1980), a filmed version of her one woman Broadway
show. That same year she appeared in the feature film First
Family (1980), playing Gloria Link. In 1982 she met Gene Wilder,
the man who would become her husband, when they were filming
Hanky Panky together. They would subsequently appear opposite
each other in The Woman in Red (1984) and Haunted Honeymoon
(1986), Gilda's last film. Shortly after the movie she was
diagnosed with ovarian cancer and underwent a rigorous treatment
of chemo and the like. She eventually succumbed to the cancer
in 1989, but she did manage to write an autobiography while
she was in treatment, entitled It's Always Something. |
