| The
Writeup: A strikingly beautiful actress, Gene Tierney
was signed to a contract with 20th Century Fox after a supporting
role in the Broadway production The Male Animal brought her
acclaim. She was pegged as a star and was given plum roles,
appearing in The Return of Frank James (1940), Hudson's Bay
(1941), Belle Starr (1941), Sundown (1941), Son of Fury (1942),
Thunder Birds (1942) and Heaven Can Wait (1943) before landing
her most famous and popular role in Laura (1944), playing
the title character. It remains her most memorable film annd
most people associate her with that picture before anything
else. The next year she was nominated for an Academy Award
for Leave Her to Heaven (1945). Other feature films in her
career include The Razor's Edge (1946), That Wonderful Urge
(1948), Whirlpool (1949), Where the Sidewalk Ends (1950),
The Mating Season (1951), Way of a Gaucho (1952), Never Let
Me Go (1953) and The Egyptian (1954). In the mid 50s she suffered
a nervous breakdown due to a number of circumstances (her
marriage falling apart and her love affair with Aly Kahn being
the sole focus of the press were big factors) and was hospitalized
for a long period of time. She appeared in a few films in
the early 60s but her career was essentially over. |
